Lumecca IPL: The Advanced Light Treatment for Pigmentation, Redness and Sun Damage

6 min read

Uneven pigmentation, facial redness and visible thread veins can make the skin look older, duller or less even. While skincare can support general skin health, it may not be enough to improve pigment or visible vessels that sit beneath the skin’s surface.

Lumecca is an advanced intense pulsed light treatment designed to target unwanted pigmentation, redness and vascular concerns. By delivering carefully controlled pulses of light into the skin, Lumecca can create a clearer, brighter and more even-looking complexion with minimal disruption to your usual routine.

What is Lumecca?

Lumecca is a professional intense pulsed light treatment, commonly known as IPL. Although IPL is often described as a laser treatment, it is not technically a laser. A laser uses a single wavelength of light, whereas IPL uses a range of wavelengths that can be filtered and adjusted for particular skin concerns.

The light energy is absorbed by specific targets within the skin, such as melanin in areas of pigmentation or haemoglobin within visible blood vessels. This controlled energy causes the targeted pigment or vessel to heat while aiming to minimise unnecessary damage to the surrounding tissue.

Over the days and weeks following treatment, the body gradually processes the treated pigment or vessels, creating a clearer and more even-looking appearance.

What can Lumecca treat?

Following a consultation and skin assessment, Lumecca may be recommended for concerns including:

  • Sun damage

  • Age spots and sun spots

  • Freckles

  • Uneven pigmentation

  • Facial redness

  • Visible facial vessels

  • Thread veins

  • Redness associated with rosacea

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Areas of photodamage

Common treatment areas include the face, neck, décolletage and hands. Other areas may be considered depending on the concern, skin condition and individual suitability.

Not every type of pigmentation should be treated with IPL. Pigmented lesions that are new, changing, irregular or medically unexplained must be assessed appropriately before cosmetic treatment. Melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation also require careful assessment because heat and light-based treatments may sometimes aggravate these conditions.

What are the benefits of Lumecca?

Lumecca can be an effective option for patients who want to improve the visible effects of sun exposure, pigmentation and redness without undergoing an invasive procedure.

Potential benefits include:

  • A clearer and more even-looking skin tone

  • Reduced appearance of brown spots

  • Reduced facial redness

  • Improvement in visible vessels

  • Brighter-looking skin

  • Minimal downtime for many patients

  • Treatment of several concerns during the same appointment

  • A personalised course based on the skin’s response

Results vary between individuals and cannot be guaranteed. Some concerns respond more readily than others, and future sun exposure, hormonal changes, skin conditions and lifestyle factors can influence how long the results remain visible.

What happens during a Lumecca appointment?

Every Lumecca treatment at Ultra Aesthetics begins with a professional consultation and skin assessment.

We will discuss:

  • Your main skin concerns

  • Your medical history

  • Medication and supplements

  • Previous skin treatments

  • Recent or planned sun exposure

  • Use of tanning products or sunbeds

  • Your current skincare routine

  • Your expectations and desired outcome

  • Potential benefits, limitations and risks

Your skin type and the nature of the pigmentation or redness will be carefully assessed. Clinical photographs may also be taken with your consent so that we can plan your treatment and monitor your progress.

Where appropriate, a patch test may be performed in line with the treatment protocol, your individual risk assessment and clinic requirements. Treatment should only proceed when the practitioner is satisfied that it is safe and appropriate.

What does Lumecca feel like?

Before treatment, the skin is cleansed and protective eyewear is provided. A cooling gel may be applied, depending on the treatment protocol.

The Lumecca handpiece is positioned against the skin and controlled pulses of light are delivered across the treatment area. Each pulse may create a brief warm or snapping sensation, which is often compared to the feeling of a small elastic band against the skin.

The level of discomfort varies between individuals and may depend on the area being treated, the concern being targeted and the treatment settings used. The device includes cooling technology to support patient comfort and help protect the skin.

Appointment length varies according to the size and number of areas being treated.

What should I expect immediately after treatment?

The skin may appear warm, pink or mildly red immediately after Lumecca. Some patients experience a sensation similar to mild sunburn, which normally begins to settle after treatment.

Pigmented areas may become temporarily darker or more noticeable before they improve. They may take on a speckled or “coffee-ground” appearance and gradually flake away or fade as the skin renews.

Visible vessels may initially appear darker, lighter or more prominent. Some vessels may blanch or temporarily change colour before the body gradually processes them.

Temporary effects may include:

  • Redness

  • Warmth

  • Mild swelling

  • Tenderness

  • Darkening of pigmentation

  • Temporary dryness or flaking

  • Increased visibility of treated vessels

Do not pick, scratch or exfoliate darkened pigmentation. It should be allowed to shed naturally to reduce the risk of irritation, scarring or post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Is there any downtime?

Many patients can return to their usual activities shortly after treatment. However, redness, warmth, swelling or darkened pigmentation may remain visible for several days.

The amount of downtime depends on the area treated, the intensity of treatment, the condition being targeted and the way your skin responds.

Treatment should be scheduled carefully if you have an important event approaching, as the skin may not look completely settled immediately afterwards.

How many Lumecca treatments will I need?

Some patients notice an improvement following one appointment, but a course of treatments may be recommended for the best outcome.

The number and spacing of appointments will depend on:

  • The condition being treated

  • The depth and amount of pigmentation

  • The number and size of visible vessels

  • Your skin type

  • Your response to treatment

  • Your skincare and sun-protection habits

  • Your desired outcome

Your practitioner will explain the recommended course during your consultation. Maintenance appointments may be beneficial because IPL cannot prevent new pigmentation or vessels from developing in the future.

How should I prepare for Lumecca?

Before your appointment, you may be advised to:

  • Avoid deliberate sun exposure and tanning

  • Avoid sunbeds and artificial tanning products

  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day

  • Inform the clinic of all medication and supplements

  • Disclose any medication that may increase light sensitivity

  • Avoid irritating or active skincare when instructed

  • Inform the clinic if you develop an infection, rash or broken skin

  • Avoid waxing, chemical peels or other potentially irritating treatments when advised

Do not stop prescribed medication without speaking to the healthcare professional who prescribed it. If a medicine may make your skin sensitive to light, your treatment may need to be postponed or medical advice obtained.

You should arrive with clean skin and without make-up on the treatment area where possible.

Lumecca aftercare

Following treatment, carefully follow the personalised aftercare provided by your practitioner.

General advice may include:

  • Use a gentle cleanser and fragrance-free moisturiser

  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 every day

  • Avoid direct sun exposure

  • Do not use sunbeds

  • Avoid picking or scratching treated pigmentation

  • Avoid exfoliating acids, retinoids and irritating skincare until advised

  • Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms and excessive heat temporarily

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for the period recommended by your practitioner

  • Avoid additional facial or energy-based treatments until the skin has recovered

  • Keep the skin cool, clean and well moisturised

Consistent sun protection is essential. UV exposure can increase the risk of complications and contribute to the development or recurrence of pigmentation.

Is Lumecca suitable for everyone?

Lumecca is not suitable for every patient or every skin concern. Treatment may need to be postponed or avoided if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Have an active infection, rash or open wound

  • Have recently tanned skin or active sunburn

  • Have recently used a sunbed or artificial tanning product

  • Take medication that increases light sensitivity

  • Have certain light-sensitive medical conditions

  • Have a history of abnormal wound healing or scarring

  • Have suspicious or undiagnosed pigmented lesions

  • Have certain medical conditions affecting the skin or immune system

  • Have had another treatment that has not fully healed

  • Cannot follow the required sun-avoidance and aftercare instructions

This list is not exhaustive. Your suitability will be determined through consultation, medical screening and skin assessment.

Are there any risks?

Lumecca is a professional light-based treatment and is not risk-free. Expected temporary reactions include redness, warmth, swelling and darkening of treated pigmentation.

Less common complications may include:

  • Blistering or crusting

  • Burns

  • Prolonged redness or swelling

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

  • Hypopigmentation or lightening of the skin

  • Infection

  • Scarring

  • Changes in skin texture

  • Unsatisfactory or uneven results

  • Aggravation of an existing pigmentation condition

  • Eye injury if suitable protective eyewear is not used

Choosing an appropriately trained practitioner, providing an accurate medical history, avoiding tanning and following all preparation and aftercare instructions can help reduce these risks.

Contact Ultra Aesthetics promptly if you experience blistering, increasing pain, marked swelling, weeping, signs of infection, an unexpected change in skin colour or any other concerning reaction.
